The South African Medical Association Bursaries

Dear Bursary- and Scholarship - candidates

As you might be aware, SAMA is a non-profit company which depends on sponsorships and donations to be able to provide the medical student bursaries and PhD- as well as Research Masters scholarships that we have been offering. Due to the unfortunate economic climate emanating from the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our stakeholders and other companies, whom had previously contributed toward funding for bursaries and scholarships, have not made sufficient financial contributions, as many companies were bracing themselves for the unexpected.

SAMA is therefore not able to proceed with the bursaries and scholarships that we normally offer and has embarked on a marketing drive again, to secure funding to be able to pick up the bursaries and scholarships as soon as we possibly can. The situation will be reviewed again in the 4th quarter of the year and a decision will be made by the SAMA Board with regard to a way forward for 2021. It is very unfortunate indeed as SAMA is keen to support medical students and to promote research and development in medicine. Please be assured that we are trying our utmost to reinstate the bursaries and scholarships as early as possible.

We should have more information in this regard at the end of 2020.
